WINE BAG → WINE CARRIER → WINE COOLER

Taking PackIt’s original Freezable Wine Bag upmarket with new materials and gel technology, then using that platform to open a new category: a dedicated Wine Cooler.

01 FEATURED DESIGN CASE STUDY

WINE CARRIER & WINE COOLER

PackIt's Freezable Wine Bag was already doing something the budget bags on Amazon couldn't: chilling a bottle with no ice pack. But sitting next to the mid-market competition, its materials read cheap. The brief was to move the platform upmarket with new fabrics, new hardware, and a real insulation upgrade and use that same work to open a second product the category was missing.

PHASE 01

MARKET & CATEGORY RESEARCH

COMPETITIVE MAPPING

Research comes before design, not after. Before touching a sketch, I mapped several popular wine bags and carriers I could find against price and material quality, then pulled category sizing to confirm where the real opportunity sits.

WINE LANDSCAPECompetitive landscape mapped by retail price and tier.

The finding that shaped the whole project: the Best tier is winning on materials, not premium performance. The opportunity: upgrade PackIt's materials without giving up the active cooling nobody else in that tier has.

PHASE 02

TECH PACKs

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS / FACTORY COMMENTS

Full construction and hardware specs went back to the factory as marked-up tech packs. See the annotated pages here.

PHASE 03

FROM WINE BAG TO WINE CARRIER

MATERIALS & SILHOUETTE UPGRADE

The original Wine Bag proved active cooling works at a Good-tier price. Moving it into the Carrier meant a real platform upgrade achieved through new fabric, a reworked gel and liner system, and hardware that could carry more weight across multiple bottles.

The 1680D poly and a radiant liner are what let the Carrier hold its own against the YETI Rambler Chiller ($75) at almost a third less, and it collapses flat, which a rigid metal chiller can't do. That's the argument for the Better tier: PackIt doesn't have to choose between performance and portability.

Every gel reformulation and liner lamination went through sewn samples before it went back to the factory as a tech-pack comment. Thermal performance and seam strength were tested on real samples and hardware.

PHASE 04

The WINE COOLER

NEW CATEGORY OPPORTUNITY

The same competitive map exposed a second gap next to the pricing one: nobody in the category makes a dedicated wine-chilling accessory that's actually easy to carry and use. It's rigid metal coolers on one end, and single-bottle bags with no real presentation on the other. That gap, plus a price point sitting below the Carrier, opens a genuinely new accessory, one built to double as a gift, not just a utility item.

The Cooler reuses the gel formulation and radiant liner already proven on the Carrier, which keeps bag cost down and gets it to sampling faster. What changes is form and presentation, a shape built around one bottle, an easier open/close, and finishes that hold up as something you'd actually hand someone or present during a meal.
